Making A Comeback

With Christmas just around the corner, people are thinking about gift ideas more and more, and whether it is a new car, a puppy, or even just clothes, it is important to get ahead of the rush of Christmas consumers. One thing this year on many people’s wish list will be the brand new UGGS although this is not the first time the UGG trend has made an appearance through high schools, and it probably will not be the last.

During the early 2000s, UGGS were at the top of the fashion charts, a necessity for many if asked.  CNN recently released an article stating that the return of UGGS is comparable to the revival of the classic Crocs, which have also had a recent comeback on the fashion scene. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, and Britney Spears were caught in UGG mania, giving the company some light on the red carpet. The UGG story, however, goes beyond the early 2000s and in fact started in the late 90s.  A man named Brian Smith, from Australia, who moved to southern California, noticed when surfing that no one wore the typical slippers he was used to where he was from, so he made his own. While struggling to find stores to carry his product, Brian sold UGGS out of the back of his car. Due to flip flops being in main use on the hot California sand, he had to find other forms of exposure. Brian attempted to send over three hundred celebrity stylists his shoes, and celebrities like Kate Hudson and Tom Cruise took up the offer although not until 2000.

Brian combined leather, cotton, and wool to bring about the original Uggs, all the while maintaining the idea that we must return or replace what we take from the earth. Styles like the black minis and one button Chesnut minis were the peak of 2000, and even though the style has changed in the past decade, the Classic and Classic Minis walked so that the Tasmans could run.
