Polar Plunge

The Polar Plunge is a charitable event looking to raise awareness for athletes with special needs.  It is sponsored by Unified Track and Field, a club here at CCHS.  The Polar Plunge consists of jumping off a dock at the Kentucky Dam into freezing cold water.  Some participants alternatively run a 5k instead of braving the waters, while others participate in both.  This year’s events will be held on March 4th.

The Sponsor of UCS, Mrs. Ward, has been involved with the Polar Plunge for 8-10 years.  When asked about the Polar Plunge, she stated, “It is a fun and unique way to get the word out about special needs and it is obvious by the turn out for this event. It has grown so much that parking is full and shuttle buses are required to transport contestants.”

Our school nurse, Erin Garland, has been a participant in the Polar Plunge for the last several years and has been involved with Special Olympics since 2015.  Garland has run the 5K and taken the plunge multiple times. Nurse Garland has a daughter in Special Olympics, and when asked what this event means to her, she told us, “I have a daughter that does Special Olympics and coaching is very rewarding to see so many people supporting Special Olympics and raising awareness for all that it offers.”

CCHS President of the Polar Plunge, Kenzie Dick, spoke to the Laker Review. When asked about the Plunge she told us, “This event is a great way to raise awareness for athletes with special needs, it allows people to come together and have a great time.” She told us that FBLA may collaborate with UCS on this year's event. Kenzi stated, “Everyone is welcome to participate.” There will be people from all walks of life taking part in this event.

This year’s event will be a group effort between UCS and FBLA with volunteers coming from both clubs.  Several teams from different schools and organizations will compete.  Awards will be given for the best spirit, teamwork, etc... FBLA is looking for CCHS Faculty and Staff to sign up for this year’s event.  If you are interested, please see Mrs. Fritche or Mrs. Ward.
