Academic Team

The Calloway County High School Science Bowl teams competed on Friday, February 24, 2023, in the 15th annual Department of Energy Regional Science Bowl on the UK-Paducah Campus. The annual event tests students’ knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, space, energy, and math. The Lakers competed against teams from Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois in the all-day event, where the winner advances to the National Science Bowl in Washington, DC.

Calloway Team 1 ended the day with a close loss to McCracken County, taking 2nd place overall and winning $1000 for the school. The Laker team led by Isaac Martin, captain, Ethan Cain, Amber Wu, Elizabeth Lanier, and Aary Patel defeated Marshall 2 (108-12), Graves 1 (126-18), and Graves 2 (168-14) in morning pool play. The afternoon bracket placed the Lakers against Graves 1 again, winning 90-12 in the semifinals.  The Lakers drew a tough set of questions in the final round, taking their only loss of the day to the Mustangs (20-38).

Calloway Team 2 went 2-1 in morning pool play, defeating Livingston and Ballard and taking their only loss to McCracken, the event champions.  Calloway 2 was led by Connor Pile, Brayan Ventura, Tommy Gomez, Max Chapman and Sam Houston.

The Lakers competed in the Murray State University History Day Competition on March 9th, taking home multiple championship trophies. The Lakers won both the U.S. History and World History competitions and took the top two individual awards in U.S. History. Senior Cesar Villeda won the overall title for the third year in a row. Senior Enas Abo Al Haija finished as the individual runner-up. Calloway took the top four individual awards in Word History. Freshman Tommy Gomez won the overall title.  Sophomore Nathaniel Fowler placed second, sophomore Levi Dunnaway placed third, and freshman Grant Todd placed fourth.

The Calloway County Academic team also attended the state competition in Louisville on March 17-20. The CCHS Future Problem-Solving team placed ninth in the state, and Aubrey Naber and Madison Morris placed first and third respectively in Alternate Future Problem-Solving. Drake Calhoon also placed in the State in Composition. Each member of the state team worked extremely hard to even make it to that level of competition, so the Laker Review would like to congratulate all of them.
