Library Media Specialist Honors Veterans
What originated as ‘Armistice Day’ following the first anniversary of the first World War has since been amended to the title of ‘Veteran’s Day’ to account for those who served in all wars. Much like the students, teachers, and parents of Calloway County, millions across America celebrate their loved ones and honor veterans, both past and present, in a multitude of ways.
Our own Mrs. Spiceland has an ardent connection to the holiday, with some of her family having served in the military for some time. Her grandfather, great-grandfather, and their brothers served our country with pride. Testaments to their heroism are on display in the Calloway County High School library.
Photographs of the men in uniform from World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War sit proudly displayed on the central table in the foyer of the library, along with a copy of Spiceland’s Grandfather’s registration card that she was delighted to find through the Ancestry.com page of the Kentucky Virtual Library. Any student can access this source both in school and at home if they want to research their own family history.
Along with the photographs, the WWII uniform of Mr. Eugene Chaney (One of the first agriculture teachers after the school was consolidated in 1960) is displayed for students to view. To Spiceland, this serves as a reminder of the honorable men and women that fought for our freedom, and those that are currently active in the military that continue to preserve those freedoms.
“Veteran’s day is about honoring those who served our country,” Spiceland comments, “and I’m glad that members of my family have served.” She and other proud Americans know that without the courage and honor of Veterans across the country, the United States would not be the pillar of freedom that it is today.
From the Laker Review staff of Calloway County High School, we salute veterans both past and present. Thank you for your tremendous dedication to our country.
