Academic Team State Tournament

The Calloway County High School Academic Team spent a productive weekend in Louisville, KY March 19-21, 2022 competing in the KAAC Governor’s Cup State Competition. Middle and high schools from across the Commonwealth convened at the Galt House for the three-day event, highlighting some of the most talented students from across the state.  The Lakers came home with a state championship in one event and an 11th place overall finish.

 

The Laker FPS team wrote the state championship winning booklet on mining reclamation, earning a trip to the FPSPI International Conference in Amherst, MA June 7-11, 2022. Their winning solution involved the development of a community recreation center that converted mechanical energy from exercise equipment to mining reclamation devices to remove residual toxins from abandoned mining sites. The FPS team was led by senior Laken McDaniel, junior Drake Calhoon, sophomore Sidney Lasley, and freshman Brooklyn Swatzell.

 

The Laker Academic Team won 11th place overall with the following students competing in written events:

Math: Ashleigh Caldwell, Chaney Robinson

Science: Ethan Cain, Isaac Martin

Social Studies: Jayden Morris, Cesar Villeda

Language Arts: Ellie Whisman

Arts and Humanities: Ellie Whisman

Composition: Drake Calhoon, Laken McDaniel

FPS Individual: Drake Calhoon, Laken McDaniel

 

The Lakers are coached by Erica Gray, Lane Springer, Dan Thompson, and Margaret Richter.
