Prom 2023: Plans for 2024 Underway

On April 29, Calloway County High School held their highly anticipated prom. Many months of hard work and preparation were put into this project and the outcome was well worth it. The high school’s prom committee, consisting of students and staff, works year-round preparing and planning for prom. All that the rest of the students see is the three days that the committee spends in the gym setting the scene for the event, but in reality, the process is much longer than that.

Preparation for prom is no easy task. There is planning, budgeting, time management and many other aspects involved in the process. In the words of Mrs. Ernstberger, “It is very time consuming.  Most people do not realize the amount of time that goes into planning.  Money has to be budgeted and saved to make sure that students get the prom that they would like.” All the hard work more than paid off with the outcome of this year’s prom. This year we had over 110 couples that walked during the Grand March. Also attending was an audience of over 400 people who came to support their families or friends walking at the Grand March.

The theme for this year’s Prom was “At Last” by Etta James. Determining the theme, chosen by the prom committee, even has a strict process.  Each subcommittee submits a theme song and all members of the prom committee vote.  The song with the most votes wins and that becomes the theme of prom.

While Mrs. Ernstberger and everyone who had the opportunity to attend agrees that this year’s prom was a huge success, there were still aspects of it that could have been improved. One of the main aspects that Mrs. Ernstberger wished was changed was that a majority of the students left soon after the Grand March. This is an issue because the students and teachers worked so long and hard to make the night as special as possible for the kids attending, and those kids should use their opportunity to enjoy the night for as long as possible.

According to Mrs. Ernstberger, the preparation for next year’s prom begins as early as three days after prom ends. This means that the preparation period for prom next year has already begun.

Prom is something students are already looking forward to for next year. Calloway County’s prom is one of our greatest traditions, with Grand March being the main event for our prom festivities. Our students and staff work together to give us the best prom they can, and with this year as proof, they are very good at putting together this special night.
