US Lack of Culture Diversity Acceptance
The United States has been considered the melting pot of the world for centuries. People have come from all over just to live here for a multitude of reasons. All kinds of cultures have merged in this country for over two decades.
Many diverse groups have come into one central location and have, thus, adapted to each other. However, not everyone has been accepting of the differences of the cultures around them. Even here in Calloway County, we can see people being unaccepting of the customs and people as a whole. Some people who do not have distinctive cultures are openly against these groups while others are actively trying to learn about and adapt with them. Everyone has a different experience regarding these people.
Senior Molly Horton—whose mother is originally from Honduras—says, “A lot of people find the customs or foods weird when they are normal to me because of the culture.”
Obviously, as anything else, there are two sides to every story. Americans without distinctive cultural customs always seem to have something to say about those who do, whether it be good or bad.
Sophomore Sidney Lasley, “I think other cultures are neat and should be celebrated more. I don’t think we appreciate them enough. Learning about other cultures is so cool.”
Lasley comes from a family without distinctive cultural backgrounds. She is very open to learning about other cultures and adapting to things which are appropriate and what’s not.
Different cultures can be very interesting if one can see past the differences. There’s so much to learn and experiences to be had when people just open up to the possibilities around them.
