Laker Archery’s On Target

Our 2022-23 CCHS archery team is again led by coach Onda Sheridan for the eighth year in a row, and sights are set high for their successes this season. One notable member of the archery team is senior and four-year member Maronda Sheridan. According to Sheridan, “This year’s team will be very competitive, making the team will not be easy.” Maronda began shooting archery in 4th grade. She gained interest because her older brother also competed while he was in school. Maronda’s favorite part of being on this team is “Traveling to state” and after the shoot “Going to eat at Longhorn with the team.” Another of her favorite parts of archery is making funny memories with the team.

The future of the CCHS archery team is very bright, but most people do not know about its past. The archery team was founded nine years ago by Mr. Loveless, and for the past eight years has been coached by Onda Sheridan. When asked about her hopes for this year’s team, Coach Sheridan says, “I have a lot of confidence with this year's team and hope they keep improving.” Coach Sheridan has very high hopes for the team this year, saying they should have record breaking high scores.

The thirty-member team has multiple upperclassmen, with six seniors and six juniors leading the group. The top-scoring seniors include Daven Lewis, Rebecca Grosz, and Haley Dawson. The top-performing juniors are Abbey Tabers, Averie Crick, Ethan McPhail, Matthew Jones, and Nathan Dietz. The archery team does not have continued success through luck; however, as they train up to six hours a week in three, two-hour sessions. Team practices are held in the cafeteria, usually close to the time school lets out. With a schedule like that, there’s no question why the Calloway County High School archery team is projected to have a successful year.
