Disney Star Announces Faith to the Media
Joshua Bassett, best known for his acting in the series High School Musical: The Musical - The Series, recently had his fans concerned by his tweet on January 5th, 2023.
Part of this tweet said, “Jesus Christ is the only way.” The comment section began to fill with snarky, harsh comments about his change of beliefs and how he must have been hacked. In late January, Joshua assured fans that he was not hacked, but is “. . . better than I have ever been.” It is hypocritical for fans to mock Bassett because of his beliefs.
Later, it was revealed that Joshua was attending Bethel Church and how he had reached out to his dad to get saved as a Christian. Frustrated critics cried “manipulation” due to the policies this church has (his dad agrees with those policies). Many were surprised at Bassett’s concert in LA because he sang worship songs, and many shared their testimonies about their faith along with the artist. This added to the frustration fans felt over his new belief system, since it interfered with the music they listen to.
Although Joshua Bassett is a celebrity, we do not know his personal character or feelings, which is okay, as he is human just like the rest of us. To base support for him on what we WANT his character to be and then when it turns out not to be what we had wished, is not fair to him. Furthermore, shaming anyone for being a Christian is equally as terrible.
Our nation is built on freedom of religion, and Bassett found his freedom IN religion. Respect for that has been lost... when will it be found again?
