Chess Team Goes to State
Chess is a strategic game that requires a strong amount of focus. If you make one wrong move, then you are in checkmate. In chess, there are six types of pieces: pawn, queen, rook, bishop, king and knight. During games, students must keep a log of their chess movements. With so many rules, players require a strong ability to strategize; thus, many players find ways to remain calm while in a match; some even find balance through a sense of humor. With that being said, here is a joke for my chess players out there. What is a chess player’s favorite rock band? Queen.
Anyways, the CCHS Chess Team competes in tournaments. The regional tournament, February 25th, had four students from Calloway competing during four rounds. During rounds, if a student wins, then the team receives a point. Overall, the CCHS Chess Team placed 3rd place with 7 ½ points and qualified for state. If a student personally wins 4 rounds at regionals, then they qualify for state as an individual; Micah Patton did just that.
The team competed in Louisville on March 25th and placed 11th in the state. Micah Patton was proud of his team by saying, “The team worked hard, we played hard and overall, as a team, we were strong.”
Team sponsor Angela Hoback suggests a website and an app for anyone who wishes to improve their chess strategies. The website, Chess.com, allows players to play a game with anyone they know. The app is Li chess app. This app helps with improving chess moves.

Chess is not for the weak. If you are interested, bring your strength to room 703 on Thursdays to become a part of the club and possibly the team. If you need motivation, pizza is included.
