Mrs. Boyd’s “Aha Moments”
“I love being able to see students have their ‘Aha Moment’ when they do something that they did not think they could do,” was Mrs. Boyd’s response to the question, “What makes you want to be an art teacher?”
Many students have wondered about Mrs. Boyd and how she got her start. How did she realize she wanted to pursue art? When did she have her “Aha Moment”?
While Boyd has been teaching art for many years, the lockdown during covid enabled her to think outside of the box with her career. “I was going through a tough time and lock down had just become a big thing.” Mrs. Boyd said she found a telecourse (a television-broadcasted learning course commonly used for students during the covid-19 lockdown). “There was this college in Flagstaff, Arizona that would broadcast art classes online,” Mrs. Boyd spoke enthusiastically, “and I just randomly happened to cross it one day.”
After seeing the telecourse broadcast, Mrs. Boyd began attending the classes; they soon became something she started to look forward to.
“Attending these telecourses just slowly made me feel better and better” she said. “Eventually I just said to myself, “I'm going to do this; I'm going to go back and get my art degree.”
Excited about pursuing a master’s degree in art, Mrs. Boyd went to Murray State and revisited the passion for art that she had forgotten about so long ago.
“I think the most important thing to do when you learn something is to share it. That is something you really must do, and I like the fact that I can come here every day, do that, and teach you guys how to do it too.”
Boyd’s students appreciate their teacher’s passion for art. 10th grader Maelynn Casey notes, “I love Mrs. Boyd. I have genuinely learned so much from her and her class. I'm not joking when I say I use what she has taught me in my everyday life."
