School Spirit
Here in Calloway County High School, spirit days happen often. Each day of a seemingly normal school week has a theme; Like Meme Day, Opposite Day (where students dress as teachers and teachers dress as students), Country vs Country Club, Laker Red Day, Night in vs Night out, Athlete vs Mathlete, Christmas, Anything but a Backpack, and more.
These spirit days are meant to bring student morale up before big games, like Calloway vs Marshall, or Calloway vs Murray. More often than not, most students do participate, but there are a few who do not (For whatever reason). Teachers even take part in the dressing up, spirit days are organized by the spirit committee head, Lydia Bell.
Bell and those on the committee have a process for producing ideas for the spirit days, Bell and everyone on the committee have a group chat that they are in. In this group chat they discuss ideas for the different spirit days, then Lydia will organize them. Then they are sent to Mrs. Ashley Fritsche to be approved and sent to Mr. Christopher King as the final approval, or denial.
Many different students were interviewed, and all had differing opinions on spirit days;
Luke Cullop, a football player and Senior, said that spirit days set the mood and gets everyone ready to go play. “I think the days are cool, I just don’t dress up.”
Eli Finley, a basketball player and Freshman, said; “We all like them (spirit days). It’s cool to see kids show this care and we appreciate it!”
Finley’s favorite spirit day was Zoom Meeting Day, and wishes we had a Favorite Sports/Athlete Day.
Amberlyn Hall, a cheerleader, and Freshman, said the spirit days make the players excited for the game(s). Hall’s favorite spirit day was Pajama Day.
Sarah Wilson, a Senior, said that Opposite Day was her favorite because; “It’s funny to see how teachers think kids dress, especially Mr. Dial.”
Emma Martin, a member of the track team and Freshman, said; ‘It’s really fun when you see other people supporting the athletes, and doing it happily and willingly.” Marten also said, “A spirit day I would love to see is ‘Twin Day,’ like when people dress alike!”
Macy Kirks, a Junior, said; “Everyone was posting about Anything but a Backpack Day.” Kirks was not at school but enjoyed seeing her friends' posts.
Overall, spirit days are very important to students and show that kids really do care about our athletes and sports teams.
