The Importance of Volunteering

According to nonprofitssource.com, “Approximately 63 million Americans—25% of the adult population—volunteer their time, talents and energy to [make] a difference.”  With the current depressing state of the world, volunteering is needed now more than ever.

With the emergence of online apps like Zoom, students can volunteer virtually. For example, students can tutor struggling children with academic assistance, or students can be a part of an organization like Best Buddies.  According to the Harvard International Review, Best Buddies is “The world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical, and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”

Additionally, students can volunteer in-person with school organizations like BETA or FBLA.  The main goal of these school-based organizations is to serve the community.  If students do not wish to be a part of a school club, they can volunteer independently through calling a local hospital or animal shelter.

There are many benefits of doing volunteer work.  Students can make connections with others of all ages and all different lifestyles.  Volunteering also allows students to build social skills through the experience they get from meeting others.  Finally, volunteering can help students expand their outlook on the world.

Volunteering helps students improve themselves and is an asset for them as they move on into adulthood.  Without volunteering, the world would be a darker place.
