An Amazing Donation

On Wednesday December 1, 2021, a large donation of shoes was dropped off and organized at the back door of our very own East Calloway County Elementary School. Juniors Cadwell Turner and Trace Johnson and seniors Joey Stasiulis and Peyton Maness arrived to document the event through the media. Upon entering school, the CCHS students were met with a very proud and humble JC Young, Executive Commissioner of the Kentucky Magistrates and Commissioners Association (KMCA). Mr. Young explained that he had left Frankfort at around six in the morning to help deliver around 800 pairs of shoes to the elementary school. In Young’s interview, Laker Review sportswriter Cadwell Turner asked Young how the organizations were able to afford the shoes. According to Young, “These shoes were donated by county magistrates and county commissioners state-wide. The funds raised were private donations with no public funds, grants, or federal dollars.”

Mr. Young addressed an audience of local officials, school administrators, and state personnel. Scott County Magistrate David Livingston also shared for the KMCA and stated, “It's amazing to go out and do this. We’ve been all the way over to Martin County and now we are here in Calloway County. It is truly a blessing.”

Upon invitation to pick out a pair of shoes, groups of Calloway County elementary school students stood up with anticipation and looked around curiously. The principals of all three elementary schools aided the kids in finding the perfect fit. The Laker Review staff members in attendance were able to assist in the “shopping” as well.

In closing, Michelle Hansen, Family Resource Center Coordinator for East and North elementaries expressed pride in community support and shared how overwhelmed Calloway County Youth Service Center is with the donation of so many shoes. According to Hansen, “We can't do what we get to do without community support.”
