Calloway Covid Update

The school district held a board meeting January 13th, where they voted to “end the practice of student quarantines based on at school exposure.”  The Calloway County Schools Facebook page posted the decisions made at the meeting and even said it was all very retroactive.

According to the post, if a student is exposed, the parents/guardians will be contacted and be given the option of quarantining their child. Masks remain optional for students on Calloway’s campus but are still mandated for the buses and vocational schools. Calloway has turned off the comments for this post.

With the discontinuation of the practice of mandatory quarantines by the school system, the spread of covid within in the district will only grow. As mentioned by many early on, not everyone gets symptoms of the virus. If students are not being made to quarantine and choose not to get tested, they could be unknowingly spreading it to everyone around them.

Many members of the community—whether that be parents, students, teachers, etc.—are not pleased with this decision. There are petitions going around to, at the very least, bring back required quarantines to help reduce the spread. Parents and students are issuing complaints to the board and online to their friends and family. Some people are glad to be done with the mandates. Many have been saying that this was long overdue and never should have happened in the first place.

Another board meeting took place on February 10th. At this meeting, the board decided against mandatory quarantines despite the efforts made by students. As of now, the regulations in place will remain as they are.
