Spring Break Safety

Right around the corner is the highly anticipated spring break. Of course, “safety” is not at the forefront of everyone’s plans, but it should strongly be taken into consideration. Some people travel to Florida for vacation, go on a cruise with family, attend parties, or which may be enjoyable, but all come with their own risks.

Though frowned upon, many students enjoy partying. Partying may bring about erratic behavior, impulsive decisions, and even drinking. These actions may not be preventable, but moderation is encouraged if you decide to do so. According to onlineschools.org, “South Padre Island, Texas, averages 25 arrests per day and collects $80,000 in fines during spring break. Besides not obeying the law, spring breakers also get involved with risky behavior regarding drinking past their limits.” One of the hot spots for Spring Break includes Miami, Florida. This being such a populated location, www.wptv.’s 2021 article states this, “Police say the number of arrests this year during spring break has more than doubled compared to last year.”

The increase in alcohol consumption during this time brings risk of drunk driving. In just the last year alone about one-third of car crash fatalities in the U.S. involve drunk drivers, according to the NHTSA. Partying and having fun are one thing but putting others' lives at risk is not acceptable.

With dozens of students and staff looking to venture out this spring break, the Laker Review Staff advises you to be courteous to yourself and those around you. police.vt.edu offers these helpful tips to make sure you are safe this break: Arrive safely, lock up important items and your hotel room, create a code word in case of emergency, be cautious of your desired activities, and be willing to ask for help if you need it.

Enjoy spring break, Calloway, and do your best to stay safe!
