Coach Prime To Colorado
Turn on his theme song - - Deion Sanders is heading to Colorado as the head football coach. The NFL Hall of Famer has been coaching at Jackson State University in the SWAC Conference. Sanders went 27-5 as the head coach at JSU and completed a full-on culture change. He brought his son Sheduer Sanders to play QB, making both Sanders men shine. Sheduer will follow his father once again and make the move to Colorado as QB.
Coach Sanders informed all the Colorado players by telling them, “I’m bringing my bags, and they Louis” in reference to a Louis Vuitton bag. Sanders shows great confidence in players who are not necessarily proven at this level.
Sanders has also done a few other things that were historic, like drawing attention to historically black colleges and universities. HBCUs were kind of an afterthought, but when Sanders took his head coaching job, the tone towards HBCUs around the country immediately changed. Coach Sanders helped such universities draw more funding and get much needed equipment. Sanders also brought national attention to HBCUs by drawing in the top athletes to play for him, such as Travis Hunter and Kevin Coleman.
No one had ever seen anything like what Deion Sanders was doing before now; he is regarded as the best recruiter in the college game. Now, Sanders has an even larger platform to get more recruits.
The Buffs went 1-11 last season, so the expectation for Sanders and his guys is low. This will give Sanders some time to build a tradition and a program that has a winning culture. Ironically enough, if Colorado does not start to do well, they will not be able to pay Sanders’ hefty contract.
The Colorado Athletic Department (CAD) was put on the record saying that they do not have the funds right now but are confident that Sanders and his team will be successful in drawing a crowd and generating revenue for the school.
Sanders is almost guaranteed to be a star, but it will all depend on if the players rally around him. He has succeeded in the SWAC and now it is time to see if he can compete in the Power 5 conferences.
