CCHS Wrestling Heats Up

When many people think of wrestling, they think of the WWE and huge guys with props flying around a boxing arena; however, the actual sport of wrestling is played on a circular mat with wrestlers who are trying to pin their opponents and score points to win matches. Scoring a point can be accomplished by taking down an opponent to the mat or escaping from a pin. “Pin” means an opponent is held to the ground for a three count, which results in an automatic win. The team with the most wins is declared the champion of the meet.

For CCHS, winning matches is not uncommon. Success on the mat is a tradition. For example, The Lakers have two wrestlers ranked in the state. Patrick Powers and Jacob Jones are both ranked in the top 25 in the state in their respective weight classes. According to Coach Jones, “There are several good wrestlers on the team this year who have been recognized across the state.” Other players such as Christian McIntosh and Jacob Fox are also off to a great start to the season.

Although the season is just getting started, senior night for the Lakers will be January 10, which will be a team vs. team competition (two teams competing for the most individual wins). There will be tournaments every weekend until February 24. There will also be the Laker Invitational on Saturday, December 21.

While the team is off to a great start to the season, Coach Jones has expressed the need for more wrestlers on the team for the 126-138 weight classes. If you are interested, please contact Coach Jones for more information. Coach Jones stated, “What I love about wrestling is when you step on the mat, you can’t blame anyone except yourself. It’s just you and the guy across from you.”
