CCHS Cross Country Team
The Calloway County Invitational Cross Country Tournament was held on September 3, this year. CCHS boys and girls Cross Country were represented, with a podium finish from the boys, and a solid performance by key girl runners.
Daniel Puckett, a CCHS senior, finished first out of all runners for the boys, challenged only by Austin Cavanaugh, representing Trigg County. Puckett improved on his time from the Murray Tiger Meet by 24.3 seconds, giving him a time of 16.42.5, the second fastest race ran by any runner from Region 1 this season. A teammate of Puckett’s, Corbin Henshaw, says, “What most people would consider an impossible speed to run is Daniel’s regular pace; that’s what sets him apart.” Another Senior, Dominic Cashion, finished seventh with a time of 18:20.6.
On the girls' side, Reese Settle, a CCHS junior, had an outstanding personal performance, finishing second in the Girls 5000 Meter Run. When asked what led her to reach this level of success, Settle stated, “During the summer, I ran 30 miles a week, upping my milage from previous seasons. I also focused on recovery by making sure I was stretching, eating healthier, and cutting out sodas.” When asked about her favorite parts of Cross Country, Settle replied, “I love my team, and I love the competitiveness of the sport.” Settle has also been mentoring two highly talented freshmen, Vayla Carlisle and Sadie Lilly, who finished eighth and ninth, respectively. “They’ve been working very hard and it’s paying off. I try to be an example for them and give them advice about racing.”
