Girls Basketball Update
The Calloway County Lady Lakers basketball team finished their season with an 11-16 record under the direction of first-year head coach Maddie Waldrop. The Lady Lakers, led by 8th grader Saylor Lowe, freshman Madison Futrell, junior Addi Shumacher, sophomore Reese Settle, and senior Sunny Clark, had ups and downs. A building year, 2021-22 highlighted many strengths and foreshadowed future talent. With underclassmen Lowe averaging 15.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, Settle adding 4.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game and Futrell scoring 6.5 points, the Lady Lakers return most of their key players and will continue to get contributions from players like Carson McReynolds, Jaycee Crouch, and Jaiden Koch. The Lady Lakers will look to improve their record next year, as players continue to gain experience.
The season was full of many memorable moments but competing in the regional tournament seems like the biggest. The Lady Lakers beat the Christian Fellowship Lady Eagles the first round of the district tournament with a score of 51-46. Saylor Lowe led with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Madison Futrell added 10 points to help boost the Lady Lakers into the finals against Marshall County. The Lady Lakers would lose to the Lady Marshals in the championship game but still made it to the regional tournament. The Lady Lakers would play the Carlisle County Lady Comets in the first round and eventually win a thrilling game (52-49 in overtime) against the Lady Comets. That win put the Lady Lakers in the regional semifinals against the Graves County Lady Eagles. The Lady Lakers would end their season losing 55-27 to the Lady Eagles.
Although the Lady Lakers season did not finish the way they would have liked, it was still a very successful season. The Lady Lakers will continue to improve in the offseason and will be a fun team to watch next season.
