Hear Me Out
Centering Focus
Distractions can cloud your mind. Over time, these roadblocks can seep into the pacing of your goals and can even set you behind. Being lost in traffic is harmless when you have a map to guide you, but bright lights blind you. Don’t lose track of what you’re after.
Consistency has been said to be key, as nothing will be accomplished by just writing things you want to change and leaving them. Imagine an antique on a shelf, an item only dusted off when needed. This type of goal setting only sets you up for failure. Remind yourself why you’re doing it in the first place. Then consider a goal you set for yourself or of the role models who inspire you.
Something to note is that you cannot drastically change your life in seconds. You need to learn to thrive in the current position you are in. Providing additional proof of this bravery is Matthew McConaughey. After winning the Best Actor award in 2014, McConaughey explained to reporters how someone persistently questioned him about who his hero is. He replied that it is himself, but in the future then went on to state, "I'm never gonna be my hero. I’m not gonna attain that. I know I’m not, and that’s just fine with me because that keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing.” If we absorb that same mindset, knowing all McConaughey has accomplished, then we can continue towards this new version we envision ourselves becoming.
Speaking from the mind of a senior soon to be entering college, your goals are worth it! Never would I have thought I would be applying to Yale and yet here I am. What is presumed to be unachievable can be overcome.
Hear me out, silence and focus calm the torrent surrounding you; you control those waters, so steer yourself in the direction you wish to go.
