Square Up!

-Jordyn Duncan-

It’s that time of year again, CHRISTMAS. Christmas is so much more than just presents; it's the mood and atmosphere we can feel all around us. I have the perfect Christmas song that will get you in the holiday spirit. When I think Christmas, I think of the iconic Michael Bublé and his representation of “Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas” by Meredith Wilson.

This song is guaranteed to put you in the perfect holiday mood and keep you there for the entirety of the night. I can picture sitting by the fireplace or on the couch snuggled up with a warm blanket and hot cocoa watching a movie and hearing this song play in the background. Even better, I can imagine baking cookies with my mom while listening to this song and singing along.

On the other hand, Casey’s song Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms is a fun one, yes, but nothing can beat Michael Bublé and his iconic music. Bublé’ is not boring or monotone; he is passionate and heartwarming.

Jingle Bell Rock is overrated, overplayed and obsolete. The only time I can remember enjoying it was in Mean Girls, and it's Mean Girls, so of course you'll love that iconic scene. Every year new Christmas songs are released, but they will never take away from the nostalgic feeling one gets while listening to Michael Bublé and his Christmas music.

While it is a sentimental song (okay, yes, it is a little old-timey) but that’s part of the reason why Bublé's song is a classic. Bublé's calm and relaxing voice paired with these lyrics is the perfect combination of holiday joy and love for the special season. Bublé's whole Christmas album is filled with amazing hits and representations of other artists' work.

If you find yourself needing a little holiday joy this season, put on some Bublé, grab your marshmallows and get some hot chocolate.

Looking for a song filled with the holiday spirit? Fear no more, the jingle hop has begun. Hold on tight though, because Jingle Bell Rock will sweep you off your feet as fast as ice. With the fun-filling presence it brings and the rhyme schemes, there is no way this hit would not be considered a favorite!

After we have established the best Christmas song, let us take note of one that is not. “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.”   The singer of this cover is Michael Bublé. More like Michael BORING! His monotone voice is bound to make you exhausted. Maybe the genre of this song should be reconsidered as a lullaby since surely it is not fitted for the uplifting spirit of Christmas.

One one-of-a-kind song that is suited for Christmas is my favorite, Jingle Bell Rock. This work of art is sung by Bobby Helms, who made an incredible statement with his original song. The festive lyrics help it stand out like Rudolph's nose –but in a clever way. Its influence was gathered from Jingle Bells. Granted, the lyrics may be different, but the joyful message remains.

All right, that is a wrap. Since you all have great music taste, we agree that it is ORNA-meant to be the best Christmas song. Branch out towards modern Christmas songs that are not worn out like Santa’s suit. I am CLAUS-itive that I just sleighed this issue’s Square Up. The snowball is in your court, Jordyn.
