Favorite Holidays
Holidays are days of festivity where no work is supposed to be done. There are many types of holidays. Federal holidays are set aside by the government, where school or work is suspended or reduced. In the United States, there are eleven federal holidays. According to www.federalpay.org, these holidays are New Years, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, George Washington Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Juneteenth Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Besides federal holidays, there are also several observances. These include days such as: Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. Observances are days for remembrance, awareness and celebration or events that are not normally days with time off of work. Most people usually have a holiday that is a favorite to celebrate.
At Calloway County High School, 102 students were asked which holiday was their favorite. According to the results, 59 preferred Christmas, 21 preferred Halloween, 8 preferred Thanksgiving, 7 preferred birthdays, 5 preferred July 4th and 2 didn’t prefer any holiday. These results signify that Christmas reigns supreme in the minds of most students.
Holidays are an important part of building strong bonds between others. Holidays also give many an opportunity to step away from the stress of everyday life. In modern times, breaks are essential to living a healthy life.
