MSU Chemistry Tournament: Lakers take 2nd place
On Thursday, November 9, 2023, the Calloway County High School Chemistry team competed in the 53rd annual Murray State Chemistry Tournament, held on the campus of Murray State University. The team of Olivia Anderson, Caleb Darnell, Erika Ontiveros, and Amelia Slaton earned 2nd place overall, competing against students from schools. These schools include Graves County, Marshall County, Mayfield, and St. Mary high schools in Kentucky. As well as Gallatin, Marion, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, Vienna, and Waverly high schools in Illinois. Senior Olivia Anderson placed 2nd place in the upper-level individual awards, earning a plaque, $150 cash, and an $800 Murray State Scholarship.
Students were tested on the principles of college-level general chemistry, taking an exam similar to the Chemistry 201/202 final exam given to students majoring in chemistry. Students also toured MSU’s instrumentation lab, where they received information on the various mass spectrometers available for student research.
