Boys Basketball Update
The Calloway County Lakers basketball team finished their season with a 17-14 record. The Lakers had many bright spots during this season, and the senior leadership made a huge contribution. Matthew Ray, Zach Hudgin, Kanyon Franklin and others did an excellent job keeping this team together. Matthew Ray played a large part, averaging 13.3 points and 9.7 rebounds for the season. Matthew was one of the top rebounders in the state this season. Zach Hudgin added 11.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest. Freshman Eli Finley was also a key contributor for the Lakers, averaging 16.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Eli is one of the top players in the state for the 2025 class, and he will have a significant impact on the program as he continues his career.
The Lakers season had many great moments, but the 4th District Championship would have to be the biggest accomplishment of the season. The Lakers faced the Marshall County Marshals in the first round of the district tournament. The Lakers had already played the Marshals twice this year, winning both games. The Lakers took care of business against the Marshals beating them 60-43. Eli Finley and Matthew Ray led the Lakers with 20 points. Jonah Butler had a big game having 16 points and 14 rebounds. This win boosted the Lakers into the district championship against crosstown rival, Murray High School. In the 2 meetings during the regular season the Tigers would sweep the Lakers, winning both games by at least 10 points. The Tigers were the favorites coming into the game, but it did not stop the Lakers from playing their best. The Lakers ended up with a 58-50 win against the Tigers. Eli led the team with 23 points, Matthew had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Zach added 14 points as well. This was an amazing moment for all of Calloway County, but especially for the players.
Although the season did not end the way the Lakers wanted it to, they still have a lot to be proud of. We wish the seniors that will move on to other things the best. We will be eager and excited to watch what the future holds for our Lakers.
