The Calloway County boys' soccer team has had a successful start to the 2022 soccer season. The boys started their season with a 9-4-2 record. This year the Lakers are led by senior Dalton Puckett, and juniors Bo Stom, Jude Bazzell, Ethan Carson, Alberto Boscaro, Jacob Akin, and Kolt Bazzell. Although the Lakers are off to a strong start, the end goal for the Lakers is to win the region. The Lakers will look to build off the early momentum they have gained and look to make a deep postseason run.

The Lakers competed in the 2A state tournament, a mid-season tournament for all the 2A schools in the state of Kentucky. The first round of sectionals took place at Jim Nix Soccer Complex. The Lakers faced off against the Webster County Trojans. The Lakers took a 7-1 victory, with goal contributions from Canaan Bazzell, Anthony Alvardo, Braden Lamb, Ivan Damien, Jude Bazzell, and Kolt Bazzell; Bo Stom had two goals of his own. The Lakers second round matchup took place at Hopkins County Central High School, where they took on the Hopkins County Central Storm. The Lakers would also prove victorious, winning by a score of 4-0. Jude Bazzell, Canaan Bazzell, Alberto Boscaro, and Bo Stom each scored one goal each. Sophomore Goalkeeper Hunter Williams and the Laker defense also played a great game, shutting out the opposition. Unfortunately, the Lakers would fall to the Warren Central Dragons. The Dragons defeated the Lakers by a score of 6-0. The Lakers fought hard, but their efforts came up a little short. When Jude Bazzell was asked about how he thought this year’s experience would help the team prepare for next year, he answered, “Losing to Warren Central showed what we have to do to be the best; it’s just a matter of if we want it bad enough.”

As the Lakers prepare for the final parts of their season, they will be waiting for key pieces of their team to return from injury. The Lakers have lost Dalton Puckett and Jacob Akin to injuries this year. Dalton and Jacob are key contributors and will be huge additions to help the Lakers get ready for their postseason push. The Lakers feel like whenever their team is fully healthy, they can compete with any team in the region.
